"When a position (of proximity to Allah) has been destined for a servant of Allah Ta`ala but, he is unable to reach that position through his own deeds, then Allah Ta`ala besets him with calamities to his body, wealth, or children. Allah then enables him to adopt sabr (be patient) until he reaches that position which has been determined for him.”
